The band in a live performanceBuchanan's new album, The Picture, has just been voted Album of the Year in the UK Country Radio Awards.

Sue McCarthy, who is the organiser of the UK Country Radio Awards, said that The Picture "is a very worthy winner and gained votes from all over the UK . A tremendous album throughout with some great self-penned songs from the band members, that can  stand up anywhere with the best coming out of Nashville . This is what the Radio Awards scheme is all about, picking up and running with those albums that reflect the writing and performing ability of our Brit Country Music singers and musicians."

A little bit of history....

Buchanan Travelling

Buchanan was formed in the summer of 2002.  The five members came together through a love of country music and a burning desire to write and play together.  The songs are written in an ‘unapologetic country style’, and draw on many influences, from Cash and Haggard to Parsons and The Jayhawks.  Their debut album “Stars a' Fallin’” was released on Goldrush Records in the fall of 2004.  Their second album, The Picture, has just hit the shops.

Buchanan Recording

The band has been playing to a growing fan base at home, and has also played in Europe alongside the likes of Asleep at the Wheel, Dwight Yoakam, Danni Leigh, Marty Stuart, Dave Edmunds, Bobby Bare and Chely Wright.  Through recent live shows in Europe, Buchanan has also formed allegiances with greatly respected American artists such as Ricky Broussard, Sunny Sweeney and Brennen Leigh.  They’ve also recently recorded an album with the wonderfully enigmatic Norwegian country singer/songwriter Benedicte Braenden.

Buchanan are:

  • Mark Wilkinson (vocals/guitars/mandolin)
  • Steve Conway (pedal, lap steel/dobro/guitar/mandolin/vocals)
  • David A. Smith (bass/vocals)
  • James Fildes (guitars/vocals)
  • Danny Wells (drums/percussion).
The Picture...

Dave Allan - Country Music People: "Buchanan's latest album, The Picture, is packed to the rafters with original songs and wonderfully effervescent performances backed by lashings of hot and cool steel, Dobro, mandolin, bass, drums and some wicked lead guitar.  This is country music that sits easily beside the likes of Waylon and Willie, and is a perfect showcase for the Best of British."

Jenny Alder – Americana UK Website: “Buchanan play it straight down the line, but in a way that is infectious enough to ensure that if you love this kind of music, you can’t help but enjoy it. Buchanan don’t miss a beat. No matter the band are actually from Manchester – they play this kind of music well and with an irreverent kind of respect and an unashamed passion, and perhaps their enthusiasm is all the more evident for them having been born on this side of the pond.”

Bill Beaver - Triste Magazine: "As you’d expect from a band who list their influences as ranging from Cash and Haggard to Parsons and The Jayhawks, it’s good, honest, straight-down-the-line country; well-crafted, melodic songs, written, played and sung with a passion only possible if you have a real love and feel for the music. The band may hail from England’s North West rather than America’s Southwest but listen to a track like ‘When the Sun Shines Bright’ - with Telecaster and pedal steel trading chicken-pickin' licks in the style of Messrs Burton and Perkins on Parsons’ ‘Ooh Las Vegas’ - and it’s clear that Buchanan are the real deal."

Brian Ahern, Country Music and More Website: Get behind Buchanan in their worthy efforts to promote the hidden talent that exists within British country music. So far Europe has had the best of them on the festival stage, so let’s claim them back to our stages.

Dave Cash Country Countdown Show:”I wish these guys the best of luck. They sound as good as any of the good American bands."

Graham Hassall of Radio Nightingale (Notts): "This is a fine album - really enjoyable".
